Addressing menstrual hygiene management in occupational therapy

Despite being an ADL for more than 800 million people worldwide, menstruation and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) tend to be taboo topics (Wilbur et al., 2019). Limited literature exists on occupational therapy’s role in supporting clients who have challenges related to this ADL, further exacerbating many practitioners’ unease around related topics. Yet through occupation-focused assessment and intervention, OT practitioners can bring unique perspectives to identify challenges impacting MHM, as well as promoting independence in completion, particularly for individuals with disabilities (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2020; Wilbur et al., 2019).
