Momentum Summit III: Focusing on the future of OT
Occupational therapy practitioners join together to discuss evolving practice settings and plan for the future
The Momentum Summit is an annual event that has grown in popularity by highlighting innovative and evolving practice settings, showcasing exemplars in traditional and non-traditional settings, and connecting occupational therapy practitioners with community partners and agencies. This yearly event is a joint effort between the Practice Engagement and Capacity Building and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, Access and Belonging (DEIJAB) departments.
Highlighting Momentum Summit III: Focusing on the Future
The Summit brings together a variety of voices in and outside of the occupational therapy field to share successes, acknowledge barriers, address DEIJAB matters, and recognize future opportunities in the profession. The theme for Momentum Summit III, Focusing on the Future of OT, continued the conversations on moving OT forward and implementing diverse, equitable, and inclusive practices in OT, now and in the future.
Rise together!
Inspirational speaker, Emmy award winner, and founder of The Divine Man: Men's Self-Mastery Program Iseluleko Ma'at El O kicked off the Summit as the spotlight speaker to challenge OT professionals to set high expectations for themselves and fulfill the mission of “helping people get back into the game of life.” To further promote his theme, Ise created an inspirational and motivating message to all occupational therapy professionals, challenging us to create momentum and rise together!
Momentum Summit III sessions
Momentum Summit III brought together occupational therapy professionals and experts from federal agencies, consumer groups, associations, academia, health systems, skilled nursing facilities and more.
Summit Day 1 focused on evolving practice settings in the areas of pelvic health, integrative health, technology, and DEIJAB topics; and highlighted new opportunities in coding and billing.
Students join the Momentum
In addition to our esteemed panelists, we invited occupational therapy students and volunteers to participate in the Summit as Momentum Ambassadors. Nominated students from Delaware State University, George Washington University, Howard University, and Trinity University were on site to observe panel discussions, provide support for speakers, and offer personal reflection on their experience at the Summit.
Laying the foundation
The Momentum Summit work started in 2021 as a two-day virtual event, funded in part by The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The inaugural event, titled Momentum Summit I: Building Workforce Capacity in the Community with a Focus on Driving, Access, Behavioral, and Population Health, brought more than 26 organizations, associations, and academic institutions together to discuss opportunities to expand the workforce and identify barriers that limit occupational therapy’s impact and reach. Momentum Summit I spotlight address featured Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD, Director, Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, who focused on reframing the future and highlighting occupational therapy’s distinct value.
Dr. Jones' message stressed occupational therapy's awareness of individual and organizational dynamics around culture, values, assumptions, and biases, and barriers that exists between the audience and the occupational therapy practitioner.
Moving momentum to social determinants of health
The priorities of Momentum Summit II included occupational therapy’s influence and value in mental and behavioral health in community-based practice; occupational therapy’s potential role in addressing social determinants of health (SDoH); and occupational therapy’s roots in practitioner wellbeing and professional identity, children and school-based settings, and adults with disabilities and aging interventions. Vanya Jones, PhD, MPH of Johns Hopkins University served as MS II's spotlight speaker, stressing occupational therapy's awareness of individual and organizational dynamics around culture, along with cross-cultural considerations, such as the use of language, the use of time, values, assumptions, and biases, and barriers that exists between the audience and the occupational therapy practitioner.
