The original AOTA Quality Toolkit was created based on a survey about common assessments and screening tools for adults used by occupational therapy practitioners.  AOTA has updated this toolkit to include assessments across the lifespan, along with other tools related to current quality reporting and value-based programs.

Assessments are listed for domains addressed by occupational therapy.  Using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process-Fourth Edition (OTPF-4), the practitioner should address relevant occupations, performance skills, client factors, performance patterns, contexts, and environments throughout the treatment plan, based on each individual client.

AOTA does not specifically endorse any of the external resources below.  This is not an all-inclusive list of occupational therapy assessments.

  • The practitioner should use their clinical judgment to identify tools and assessments appropriate for each client based on the client, the situation, and the psychometrics of the instruments.
  • When available, a link to more information about the tool on the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab Rehabilitation Measures Database has been provided. Otherwise, links to other pertinent information have been provided.
  • Note some assessment tools include psychometric properties in the tool's manual, which may be inaccessible unless the tool is purchased.
  • More detailed information is also available in Asher's Occupational Therapy Assessment Tools, 4th Edition
