Caring for transgender & gender-diverse (TGD) individuals: Frame of references

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people are at a higher risk of experiencing mental health disorders, suicide, substance abuse, trauma, chronic health conditions, disability, and lower education and income levels compared to gender-majority populations and disproportionately affecting TGD of color (Bolding et al., 2022).

Working with TGD clients

Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) have the skills to work with TGD clients experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, gender dysphoria, mistreatment in the workplace and/or schools, social rejection, and more. It is important to understand how someone’s minority gender status can affect their occupations. This topic provides a general overview of the various needs of transgender and gender diverse individuals. It not comprehensive or all-encompassing and encourages further discussion and research.

Frame of references

Below are a few examples of using a frame of reference that OTPs can use for guiding interventions.
