Emerging and Innovative Practice Award

Established in 2015, this award recognizes occupational therapy practitioners (clinician, educator, or researcher) who have developed innovative and/or non-traditional occupational therapy practices for underserved populations or utilized the expertise of occupational therapy in new or visionary ways to achieve significant client outcomes to keep the profession relevant and responsive to the changes occurring in health care.

Description and purpose

  • To promote the development and utilization of innovative and/or emerging occupational therapy practices that serve the diverse needs of clients in an evolving health care climate.
  • To recognize occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants (clinicians, educators, or researchers) who have developed innovative and/or non-traditional occupational therapy practices for underserved populations or utilized the expertise of occupational therapy in new or visionary ways to achieve significant client outcomes.
  • To provide incentive for occupational therapy practitioners to develop innovative and/or emerging practices that keep the profession relevant and responsive to the changes occurring in health care.

Minimal requirements

The nominee(s) shall demonstrate exemplary leadership in the development and implementation of emerging and/or innovative practice(s) in one or more of the following categories:

  • Children and youth
  • New technologies
  • Clinical interventions
  • Health promotion and wellness
  • Community-based practice
  • Mental health
  • Rehabilitation
  • Health and disability
  • Productive aging
  • Work and industry

The nominee(s) shall demonstrate notable impact on the profession through:

  • Dissemination of professional knowledge that clearly demonstrates evidence-based outcomes.
  • Building the leadership and entrepreneurship capacity of self and others.
