Orlando is known for memorable moments and INSPIRE 2024 was one of them. To kick of the 2024 Annual Conference & Expo, the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, Access, and Belonging (DEIJAB) department recognized the inaugural cohort’s successful completion of the AOTA Diverse Leaders Program (DLP) during the Diverse Leaders Program Recognition Ceremony.

The DLP launched in 2022 with grant funding from the Sandra Hoskins Legacy Foundation. Through a competitive selection process, the DEIJAB Committee recommended five applicants (Scholars) to participate in the first cohort. Selected Scholars include Dale Coffin, EdD, OTR/L, Clinical Associate Professor & Chairperson, Occupational Therapy Program, Stony Brook University (NY); Christyn (Chris) Mitchell, MS, MEd, OTR/L, Teaching Instructor, Department of Occupational Therapy, Thomas Jefferson University (PA); Letitia Osburn, DHSc, MS, OTR/L, Doctoral Capstone Coordinator, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy, Alabama State University (AL); Kathlyn (Kathy) Urdaz, OTR/L, ASDCS, Occupational Therapy Practitioner, First Step Therapy LLC (FL); and Jenny Zhong, COTA/L, Long Term Services and Support Utilization Management Reviewer, AmeriHealth Caritas (PA).

The DLP program consisted of five categories—education, leadership, mentoring, networking, and volunteering—to meet the Scholars’ goals and the program’s objectives. Scholars participated in monthly meetings featuring guest speakers, a full-day program retreat, one-on-one mentoring, and interactions with AOTA Past Presidents, the Board of Directors, and DEIJAB Committee members.

Final words and reflection

After touching reflections, the DEIJAB staff presented each Scholar with an award certificate and pin recognizing their completion of the program. The DEIJAB staff also gifted the Scholars with “I Got You” bags to support the Lands Banks Memorial Scholarship.

President Stover congratulated the Scholars and provided well wishes. “These five individuals are some of the most incredible and outstanding members of our profession, and I am both excited and overwhelmed with the joy of being able to celebrate them and the incredible things that they have done over this past 24-month journey. You have already begun to see the gaps in which you know you can fill. Your leadership is exactly the solution we need to obstacles we face.”
