Special Interest Section Quarterly Excellence in Writing Award
Established in 2010, the SIS Quarterly Excellence in Writing Award is presented every year to recognize the contributor(s) to the Quarterly newsletters by rewarding excellence in writing that also demonstrates the use of research and/or best practice to advance the profession of occupational therapy.
Description and purpose
- This award is to recognize contributors to the SIS Quarterly Practice Connections newsletter by rewarding excellence in writing that also demonstrates the use of research and/or best practice to advance the profession of occupational therapy.
Minimal requirements
- The article shall be written by an occupational therapist (OT), occupational therapy assistant (OTA), occupational therapy student (OTS), and occupational therapy assistant student (OTAS) who is also an Association member when the article is written and when the award is granted.
Criteria for selection
- The article shall reflect originality of thought or concepts.
- The subject matter shall be timely.
- The writing style shall reflect clarity, conciseness, readability, and effectiveness.
- The author(s) shall demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the topic and, where appropriate, relevant research.
- The article shall translate current research or best practice findings into a practice area or contribute to advancing the quality of occupational therapy services or education.
Selection procedure
- The Quarterly Managing Editor and the Association Communications Director select three articles that meet the award criteria.
- The selected articles are sent to the Staff Liaison, Evidence-Based Practice Program Director; Chief Officer for Knowledge; and SIS Council Chairperson. Based on the criteria identified above, these individuals rank the articles as first, second, and third choice. The article receiving the highest number of votes as first choice is the winner.
- In the event that a clear winner does not emerge, the three articles are sent to Commission on Practice (COP) members who vote to determine a winner based on the identified criteria. The decision of the COP is final.

- One award may be given each year.
