DEIJAB TOOLKIT: Transgender & Gender-Diverse Care

Caring for transgender & gender-diverse veterans

As the largest medical provider in the United States, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) treats about 9 million veterans, of which an estimated 150,000 are transgender or gender diverse (TGD) (Powell et al., 2022). Due to the high rate of TGD Americans serving in the military, the VA health services is the primary provider of health services for TGD individuals (Gates & Herman, 2014).

Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) work with veterans across settings, and it is important to understand military policies that may cause stress or resiliency to TGD veterans. This document describes some common health disparities that are unique to TGD veterans. OTPS must be aware of these disparities so that they can provide culturally responsive care for improved health outcomes among the TGD veteran community.

This topic provides a general overview of the various needs of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. It is not comprehensive or all-encompassing and encourages further discussion and engagement.
