Amplifying our value: Occupational therapy–facilitated "Take Your Child to Work Day"
What do you want to be when you grow up? Many American workplaces celebrate “Take Your Child to Work Day” (TYCTWD) on the fourth Thursday in April to help children of employees explore this very question. Traditionally, on TYCTWD, employees are encouraged to bring their children to their workplace so that they can experience a day in the life of a specific career field through exposure to various work-related responsibilities and interactions. TYCTWD not only serves as a pivotal opportunity for children to expand their career horizons but also for workplaces and professions to make themselves known to younger generations. TYCTWD initiatives can be intentionally designed to promote health professions—specifically, occupational therapy—to a diverse pool of potential future practitioners. This article describes how one occupational therapy university department envisioned TYCTWD activities with the profession’s future in mind.
