Using neuroscience education to address chronic pain

Nearly 12 years ago, Richard suffered a serious cycling accident. He flipped over his handlebars, landed on his neck and right shoulder, cracked his helmet, and was immediately knocked unconscious. When he regained consciousness, Richard found himself with a fractured scapula; multiple fractured ribs, scrapes, and abrasions; and intense pain. His bones healed and his scars faded, but his unbearable pain remained. As his pain continued to grow, his function declined until he had no choice but to give up his career, his favorite hobbies, and his way of life. Richard’s older children have expressed sadness, lamenting the fact that their younger siblings were too young to remember Richard the way he was before the accident. To this day, they tear up when thinking about all that their father has lost due to his battle with chronic pain.
