Practicing cultural humility within the emerging health care landscape
According to the Migration Policy Institute (n.d.), approximately 43.5 million immigrants live in the United States. Numerous immigrants encounter a dual minority circumstance: they are part of a minority because of their immigration status, while also assuming the role of the primary caregiver for a family member with a disability (Arfa et al., 2020). The Latino population represents 18.9% of the total U.S. population, the second largest after the non-Hispanic White population, which has emigrated primarily from Mexico (U.S. Census Bureau, n.d.). Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) can provide an array of services for immigrants across the lifespan. Given these opportunities, OTPs will need to establish culturally sensitive services rooted in evidence-based practices with a focus on promoting cultural humility.
