Current coverage and payment in orthotics and prosthetics

Occupational therapy addresses the needs, wants, and obligations of clients whose ability to perform occupations has been affected by physical, mental, or psychosocial impairments. Orthotics and prosthetics (O and P) are specifically mentioned in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain & Process, 4th edition (OTPF-4) as assistive tools that support occupations such as dressing, personal hygiene and grooming, personal care device management, and other activities of daily living (American Occupational Therapy Association [AOTA], 2020). Practitioner awareness of billing and coding requirements is critical for accurate reimbursement of O and P services and to demonstrate occupational therapy’s active role in orthotic and prosthetic management.
