DEIJAB TOOLKIT: Transgender & Gender-diverse care

Working with TGD clients in general practice

What can occupational therapy practitioners do in general practice? Occupational therapy practitioners should continue to use a client-centered approach when working with transgender or gender diverse (TDG) individuals. While the client’s reason for services may not be directly related to their gender identity, OTs and OTAs should be aware of the possible impact their gender identity can have on their occupational performance.

Interventions & outcomes

It is important to consider the contextual and personal factors that impact the client’s function and quality of life. After using assessment material to gain insight on the client’s needs, the occupational therapists can use a frame of reference to help guide the intervention.
