Supporting the occupation of sleep with people with multiple sclerosis fatigue
More than half of people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) experience sleep disturbances or problems (Jensen & Terrill, 2013; National Multiple Sclerosis Society [NMSS], n.d.). Although physiological factors impacting sleep are difficult to treat, behavioral factors (e.g., daytime napping, decreased physical activity, and stress) can be modifiable (Hughes, 2016; NMSS, n.d.). Regardless of the cause, people with sleep problems are more likely to experience worsening MS symptoms, decreased quality of life, and higher disability than those getting restorative sleep (Brass et al., 2010; Caminero & Bartolomé, 2011; Merlino et al., 2009; Nociti et al., 2016).
