Circadian lighting: OT opportunities for overall health

Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) examine lighting environments to determine the extent to which lighting is sufficient for visual tasks. However, 2 decades of research has demonstrated the non-visual effects of light that have powerful effects on health by setting our circadian rhythms to impact sleep, mood, and alertness—among other bodily functions (Figueiro et al., 2018). This article addresses the mechanism and application of lighting to client health as illustrated in two case examples.
