Trauma-informed care principles: Behavioral health OT consult services
If we have learned anything in the past few years, it is that we are all lifelong learners, constantly seeking connection. Unexpected events happen in our lives, and we are forced to pivot. Isn't that what occupational therapy (OT) is anyway—learning how to adapt to all sorts of changes and environments we did not necessarily plan for, but are creative and resilient enough to adjust to? We are human shapeshifters and motivational coaches, meeting people exactly where they are. It is what we have been trained to do. This story addresses Nikki’s (first author) identified gap in OT practice, the barriers her facility faced, her passion for OT and mental health, and how she pivoted to meet overwhelming needs despite unprecedented changes along the way.
