The transition from clinician to full-time faculty member can be daunting and stressful. Many practicing clinicians who transition to academia have not been formally trained to teach in higher education (Beane-Katner, 2014; Foy, 2017). Subsequently, they often find themselves scrambling to learn effective teaching approaches. It is important for novice faculty members to understand andragogy, or adult learning theory. Defined as the “process by which adults increase their awareness and evaluate their experiences” (Ozuah, 2005, p. 83), andragogy provides a framework for how to teach adult learners.
