OT in Higher Ed

The entrepreneurship and innovation certificate at Duke OTD

More than 2 decades ago, Mary Foto (1998) urged the occupational therapy profession to create competency standards for entrepreneurs. Although the profession has not provided specific instruction for the delivery of entrepreneurial content, there are requirements related to business skills, which include entrepreneurial ideals. The 2023 Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE®) Standards (effective July 31, 2025) for entry level programs include standard B.4.4., Business Aspects of Practice, which states that graduates should “demonstrate knowledge of and evaluate the business aspects of practice including, but not limited to, the development of business plans, financial management, program evaluation models, and strategic planning” (ACOTE, 2023, p. 33).
