Transitions: Establishing meaningful routines for older adults
Transitioning from a cherished family home to an adult residential community or assisted living facility is a profound life change that affects not only individuals but also has a significant impact on the mental health of entire families. Recognizing the potential challenges inherent in such transitions, occupational therapy practitioners play a pivotal role in assessing and mitigating mental health challenges during these phases. The American Occupational Therapy (AOTA) 2020) Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process (4th ed.; OTPF-4) states occupational therapy practitioners address health management and can manage physical and mental health needs using strategies to navigate and access health care systems (AOTA, 2020). This article addresses multifaceted ways occupational therapy practitioners can guide individuals through transitions, emphasizing the importance of meaning, purpose, and the establishment of healthy routines.
