An overview of school-based sensory interventions using the multi-tiered system of support
Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) working in the school setting serve many different roles. Traditionally, occupational therapy is a related service provided to students who are eligible for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). In recent years, occupational therapy has also played an emerging role in response to intervention under the multi-tiered system of support (MTSS), supporting positive behavior, social participation, academic performance, and environmental modifications conducive to increasing access to school-related tasks for all children. Children in the school setting may have a variety of sensory needs that impact overall participation in school-related tasks. By providing sensory interventions that address barriers at a population and group level (Tier 1 and Tier 2), OTPs may be able to improve physical and mental well-being and support participation and success in the school setting for all students.
