The expanding role of health information technology (HIT) has produced a need for electronic health record (EHR) instruction in higher education (American Medical Informatics Association [AMIA], 2008). Competencies in computer science, health information literacy, clinical informatics, privacy and confidentiality, electronic data security, and patient-centered communication skills are considered essential for practitioners who use EHRs (United States Department of Labor: Employment and Training Administration, 2018).
