“Growing up as a sibling of a child with a chronic illness, guilt was a constant companion for me. I looked forward to going about my daily life, completing my self-care routine, choosing what I would wear and what I wanted to do. I would try and engage in extracurricular activities like art and sports, but only if I were able to get transportation. But I often wondered, why could I attempt these things and not my sister? Why was I healthy and she was not? It was so stressful for me to be the ‘normal’ child and teenager. I felt caught between two worlds; one focused on caring for my sister and the other trying to grow up with some type of normalcy.
