Empowering caregivers: Occupational therapy's role in a motherhood center
Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) have a history of working with mothers to provide support in the various demanding areas of motherhood. The postpartum transition for both first-time and veteran moms can be an overwhelming, draining, emotional roller coaster. Mothers have long been silent background figures in history; underestimated and underappreciated. As society evolves and the job of motherhood is more understood, it is becoming more apparent: mothers need support. OTPs have the skills to provide the necessary support to mothers alongside a team of people such as lactation consultants, doulas, gynecologists, and pediatricians. “It takes a village” has a new meaning, and with OTPs in the picture, mothers have greater potential for better emotional and physical health.
