The OT practitioner’s role and responsibility to quality assurance for productive aging

W. Edwards Deming (1982), the founder of Continuous Quality Improvement, once said, “Quality is everyone’s responsibility.” No truer words have ever been spoken when it comes to quality assurance and performance improvement. Merriam-Webster (2023a, 2023b) defines quality and responsibility as a “degree of excellence” and “moral, legal, or mental accountability,” respectively. So, every occupational therapy practitioner is accountable to excellence in their interactions and has a moral, ethical, legal, and professional responsibility to the care they provide on a daily basis. The practice of quality when working to facilitate productive aging can be challenging, so the intent of this article is to reinvigorate and inspire you, as the source of quality, to be more cognizant of the impact you have on quality service delivery.
