SENSORY INTEGRATION & PROCESSING

Translating Ayres Sensory Integration® into everyday life: Parents’ perspectives

Occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® (OT-ASI) is a theory and evidence-based intervention based on the principles of neuroplasticity, developmental science, and occupational therapy (Ayres, 1979). Ayres Sensory Integration describes how the nervous system perceives, interprets, and integrates sensory information from one's environment and uses this information for adaptive behaviors as a foundation for participation in activities, tasks, and occupations (Ayres, 1979; Lane et al., 2019). The OT-ASI intervention was manualized by Schaaf and Mailloux (2015) and includes direct interaction with the child as well as interactions with the child’s parents/caregivers to understand the sensory and motor foundations of their child’s strengths and challenges in everyday life.
