Can I go back to work? A work re-entry program in a rehabilitation setting

Ruether, A., & Schweitzer, V. (2022). Can I go back to work? A work re-entry program in a rehabilitation setting. SIS Quarterly Practice Connections, 7(2), 31–33.

Each year, an estimated 1 million Americans sustain a neurologic injury such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebrovascular accident or stroke, or spinal cord injury (SCI) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021a, 2021b; United Spinal Association, 2020). These types of injuries can have long-term effects on a person’s physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning, such as muscle weakness, decreased coordination, visual impairments, poor executive functioning, and changes in personality (Mayo Clinic, 2022). For these reasons, it is no surprise that many individuals are unable to return to work after a neurologic injury, as the impairments listed above make it incredibly difficult for them to return to pre-injury performance levels.
