Evidence-based predictors of post-school success

Youth with disabilities are consistently found to have poorer post-school outcomes than their typical peers (Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022) and are less likely to complete high school, attend college, be employed, and live independently (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2023; Cheng & Shaewitz, 2022). The National Technical Assistance Center on Transition: The Collaborative (NTACT:C, 2021) outlines evidence-based predictors of post-school success that are a useful tool for designing effective interventions that support successful transition to adulthood. Evidence-based interventions supporting these predictors result in greater likelihood that a student will live independently, complete post-secondary education, and be employed. Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) should use these predictors to guide intervention.
