Rethinking occupational therapy practice with autistic adults: Challenging assumptions to enhance outcomes

Wong, B., Robertson, S. M., & Kornblau, B. (2022). Rethinking occupational therapy practice with autistic adults: Challenging assumptions to enhance outcomes. SIS Quarterly Practice Connections, 7(3).

Autism is a neurological developmental disability (DD) that has an estimated prevalence of more than 2% in the U.S. and other countries (Dietz et al., 2020). Over the last decade, knowledge of autism has grown among both members of American society in general and professionals, such as occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs). Autism has also received major media attention from television shows, radio and podcasts, films, and books (Fontes & Pino-Juste, 2021). Yet, myths and incorrect assumptions about autism remain prevalent, including among professionals who work in human services and health care, such as OTPs.
