AOTA's Societal Statement on Gun Violence

Gun violence is a public health epidemic and a leading cause of premature death in the United States affecting children, families, and communities, often within the home environment. Violence from firearms, whether fatal or non-fatal, has significant physical and psychological adverse effects for those directly and indirectly affected (Institute of Medicine, 2013).

AOTA's Societal Statement Denouncing Conversion Therapy

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) asserts that occupational therapy practitioners have a role in opposing the harmful, discriminatory practice of conversion “therapy” and protecting LGBTQIA+1 people. This assertion is congruent with the AOTA 2020 Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics (2020) principles of Justice, Beneficence, and Nonmaleficence as well as the OTPF-4 framework’s definition of Occupational Justice (AOTA, 2020a; AOTA, 2020b). Occupational therapy practitioners should never participate in or promote the principles of conversion “therapy” practices as part of occupational therapy intervention.
