Workers' compensation

Workers' compensation insurance, sometimes referred to as workers' comp, is a type of business insurance generally required by states to provide for loss of income, medical expenses, and other related expenses when an employee is injured or develops a health condition related to their work environment.

Workers’ compensation programs are established and administered by each individual state. Therefore, information such as covered medical services, provider requirements, and rates can be found on individual state workers' compensation division websites.

For specific information, please refer to the U.S. Department of Labor’s page for State Workers’ Compensation Officials. This directory contains local contact information for each state and links to states’ websites.

When billing workers' compensation for coverage of medical expenses, authorization is often required prior to rendering care. Occupational therapy practitioners should contact the patient’s case manager to get authorization prior to treatment. Like Medicaid, each state has its own fee schedule and payment must be accepted as payment in full.
