What is functional cognition?

Functional cognition is the cognitive ability to perform daily life tasks through metacognition, executive function, performance skills, and performance patterns (Giles et al., 2020). Occupational therapy practitioners address functional cognition with clients across the lifespan to meet their goals for everyday activities. Occupational therapy practitioners analyze how an individual's cognition affects their ability to do the things they want and need to do and collaborate with clients to design individually-tailored interventions using activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) that are meaningful to the client and provide direct application of functional skills.
